Already half gay?
By
Michael LaBelle
Galveston
As beach towns go, like P-town is to Boston and Fire Island to New York, Galveston, on the "Third Coast" is to Houston. Barely an hour away by car, residents reckon their historic island town on the Gulf of Mexico is already "half gay," so who knows where this can go? For local information, including a section on the gay community, see the Galveston.com website.
Accommodations
The Lost Bayou Guesthouse (1607 Avenue L; 409-770-0688) is a grand old updated Victorian with unique rooms, a dry sauna, a deck with water views, and
a comfortable breakfast room --open day and night for your convenience. The friendly owners have all the information you need to enjoy Galveston to the fullest.
The Mermaid & the Dolphin (1103 Thirty-Third St; 800-930-1866) is a gay-friendly luxury resort set in a tropical rainforest garden, all-suites, each featuring a private Jacuzzi for two. This was once the Texas governor's summer mansion.
Going Out
3rd Coast Beach Bar (3102 Seawall Blvd at 31st) soon moving to a new location in downtown, has fun happy hours, bingo, hot male dancers and drag cabaret shows.
Club Groove (2409 Market St) is a multi-level gay and mixed 18-plus dance party club and cabaret on the island, with live bands, special parties, and guest DJs.
The Pink Dolphin (9th & Seawall) has great water views, Friday karaoke, weekend drag shows, and Monday night movies. On Sunday mornings from 10:30 they serve authentic local biscuits with sausage and gravy.
Robert's Lafitte (2501 Avenue Q) is a welcoming neighorhood bar, steps away from Seawall Boulevard with tropical patio, plus sports specials, pool tournaments, and spectacular events in their annual calendar.
