Adam, Greg, Ian of Wet, Brisbane
Banked on a coastline in what is known as Yuggera country, Brisbane is the capital of Queensland, the Sunshine State that occupies the northeastern corner of Australia.
Offering a striking combination of Victorian and modern architecture. About an hour's flight north of Sydney, "Bris Vegas", as it is locally dubbed, is a subtropical city -- a gateway to
the Gold Coast area and the getaway township of Noosa.
Bars and cafes
in Fortitude Valley, The Beat
(Anne St at Brunswick) is a mixed venue after-hours for partying once the other gay nightspots have called it a night.
Nearby, the Family (8 McLachlan St) has a devilishly bisexual crowd filling several levels with dance floor. Sunday Fluffy is the gayest of their nights.
Sportsmen Hotel (130 Leichhardt St; Spring Hill) is a quiet, casual watering hole with basic lodgings that serves food, and brings in a local crowd for their cheap lunch specials. Downstairs here, Mineshaft, Brisbane's men's leather/denim/uniform club Boot Co. meets on first Saturdays. The group sponsors an annual Kink party too.
Serving lunch Monday to Friday, something special every night, and happy-hour drinks, Hotel Wickham
(308 Wickham St), in Fortitude Valley, is Brisbane's wickedly fun gay
venue. With classic Queensland style outdoor areas, live shows, gaming room, dance bar, member benefits, and special events, Hotel Wickham guarantees a good time.
Central Brunswick Apartments (455 Brunswick Street; +61-73-852-1411)
offers choice four-star accommodations in the thick of it all. All hotel conveniences --
including daily maid service -- are part of the deal. An army of restaurants, cafes, shops, and a 24-hour supermarket surround the property. Adding to the luxury are a sauna, spa, mini-gym,
and barbecue on the roof level with marvelous views of the skyline.

Bodyline (45 Peel St, Westend), free men's membership spa, has steam and dry saunas, lounges and cruising areas. Their website is down, so phone before going.
Klub Kruise (29 McLachlan St), the gay-owned-and-operated cruising venue, offers hot action over three levels. Conveniently located in ever-so-gay Fortitude Valley, Klub Kruise
is safe, clean, and discreet. Free high-speed internet, solarium, plus a coffee lounge with friendly staff are at hand. Upstairs you can enjoy theme rooms, cubicles, and videos on
seven screens with glory holes standing by.
In Surfers Paradise Club R (1/3 Alison St) private men's cruise club has video lounges with five screens, play areas and cubicles, and a fully stocked retail adult shop.
In Bowen Hills,
Wet (22 Jeays St) continues to give Brisbane a splash. Sundays are the biggest hurrah, but on any day of the week this place is well-trod for the 138 lockers, private cubicles, indoor and outdoor pools, steam room, dry sauna and Jacuzzi. They also have maze cruising, glory holes, sling, lounge with cafe, and internet access. The staff is friendly, the facility clean and air-conditioned, open daily from 11am.
Big Gay Day
Brisbane's annual charity fundraiser street party is set for Sunday, March 7, 2010.
It will pull thousands of people for a single cause: to raise funds for youth suicide prevention. This top gay event presents performers and DJs from 11am to midnight on Alden St (right behind Hotel Wickham) in Fortitude Valley. Of course there is no Big Gay Day without a big drag show.
